Family Device Agreement Template
Rules your child helped write get followed. Rules handed down get
worked around.
Sit down together and agree on these points. Write them out. Both of
you sign it.
Sleep. Where do phones charge overnight, and
starting what time?
School. What are the rules during class and
homework?
Privacy. What will you look at, when, and what will
you not look at? Say this out loud so it is not a surprise later.
Communication. How do we talk to people online? What
language is not acceptable, even as a joke?
Purchases and downloads. What needs a parent’s yes
first?
New contacts. What happens when someone your child
does not know reaches out?
When something feels wrong. This is the important
one. Agree in writing that your child can bring you anything without
getting in trouble for how it started. A child who fears punishment for
the first mistake will hide the second one.
Review date. Set a date to revisit it. A
12-year-old’s agreement should not still govern a 15-year-old.
Start the conversation: “Let’s write down what we both think is fair, and I will follow it too.”
