Cyberbullying: Warning Signs and First Conversations
Cyberbullying includes repeated humiliation, threats, exclusion,
impersonation, rumor spreading, and coordinated harassment by a
group.
Signs to watch for:
- Mood shifts during or right after device use
- Sleep changes, or the phone going quiet at times it never used
to - Pulling back from friends or activities
- Dropping school participation
- Hiding the screen, or a sudden new account
- Deleting accounts entirely
Open carefully. Most kids hide cyberbullying because they expect the
phone to be taken away, which turns telling you into a punishment.
What helps:
- Ask open questions and listen longer than feels natural
- Say clearly that you will not remove the phone as a response
- Screenshot before anyone deletes anything
- Block and report inside the platform
- Involve the school when other students are involved
- Watch for signs of depression and get professional support if they
appear
What does not help: telling your child to ignore it, or confronting
the other child’s parents before you have the full picture.
Start the conversation: “Is anyone treating you badly online right now, even in a group chat?”
