Healthy Screen-Time Conversations
Screen time is a bad single metric. Three hours of video calls with
friends is not three hours alone with an algorithm.
Ask better questions than how many hours:
- Sleep. Is the phone costing hours of sleep? This is
the one that damages everything else. - School. Is homework getting done?
- Friendships. Is device use connecting your child to
people, or replacing that? - Movement. Has physical activity dropped off?
- Content. What are they actually watching and
reading? - Feeling. Does your child feel better or worse after
an hour on a given app? Ask them. Most kids know.
That last question does more than a timer. Kids can usually name the
app that leaves them feeling worse, and naming it is the start of
changing it.
Practical structure that works: phones out of bedrooms overnight, no
devices at meals, and one screen-free block each weekend. Apply the
rules to yourself too. Kids notice.
Start the conversation: “When do you feel best after being on your phone, and when do you feel worse?”
